Every organization today is using some form of cloud. As an individual, you are using some form of cloud computing service be it email, document storage or teamwork tool. This service allows us to do business using technology and resources provided by another entity at a fee or at a heavily reduced price.
It’s Value
The IT landscape has quickly shifted from on premises to a mixture to full cloud setups, mainly due to the cost saving, flexible, on-demand and easy access nature of the cloud. With this step comes a range of challenges, some of which is outline below.
There is no vendor neutral standpoint.
First, there is no vendor neutral stance. Though cloud computing runs on the same principle, many merchants use different designs and naming practices. This needs an understanding of each platform to secure it. However, this can be overcome by getting basic skills in one of the major platforms such as Amazon Web Services, (AWS), Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud.
Unsafe Designs
Once this step is taken, it leads to solving the second issue which is unsafe cloud designs. Unsafe designs are the number one challenge faced in cloud computing. There simply aren’t enough security personnel focused in this area and this makes the rise in remote working, distributed administratve setups and increased time to market for products and services something to worry about.
Next steps
Knowledge of the cloud makes you more competitive and sought-after. It expands your path in the industry. Because cloud skills are easily transferable, knowledge of any merchant platform drives you into safeguading other cloud platforms. It is important for all security personnel, especially those new to the workforce, to add cloud security to their skill set. It sets you up to be well-rounded and desirable.
