Overcoming the unique challenges of securing the cloud

This month’s article is a follow up on my previous article, the proven importance and challenges of cloud computing, which touched on the benefits of cloud computing and a few cybersecurity challenges. This month we take a deeper look at the challenges faced by cyber professionals in our quest to secure the cloud and how to effectively overcome them. Let’s begin!

Keeping up with fast changing technologies

Almost every day, we learn of new technology that is released to make things better and faster. In the year 2023, Amazon Web Services released at least ten “cool” innovations. This includes Amazon Security Lake and a generative AI powered assistant, Amazon Q. Microsoft in recent years has enlarged its cloud services to include several tools such as Security Information and Even Management (SIEM) solutions, Endpoint Detection Systems (EDRs), Data Loss Prevention Systems (DLPs) and Identity and Access Management Solutions (IAMs). Although these innovations are meant to enhance productivity and broaden clients’ options, they also demand that security professionals constantly upgrade their knowledge and skill set.

Different Recertification requirements

In addition to this, the recertification process for cloud security can become a chore. This is more so if it must be done for various cloud vendors. Vendors have different certificate validity periods and renewal requirements. This can be in the form of simple assessments, earning continuing professional education points (CPEs), a higher certification or passing a newer version of the exam. Certificate validity ranges anywhere from 12 to 36 months depending on the cloud vendor. When managing multi cloud environments, this can be quite tasking.

The Remediation

It is clear new technology will continually be produced and certification bodies will operate however they choose. In order not to get overwhelmed with the demands of securing the cloud, I strongly recommend getting to know the basics of many cloud vendors. After that, develop your skills with a vendor of interest. Your interest can come from personal preference or platforms you are comfortable with. It could also be what your employer uses or what gives you the most opportunities for your future.
